![]() ![]() The book is set in World War 2 and Arthur is sent to ‘safety’ in the countryside only to find himself dealing with witches and terrible creatures and going on adventures he never expected. It’s the hook to get us into the book and hopefully makes us read to the end!Īrthur Ness and the Secret of Waterwhistle is a fantastic adventure book which is about a boy who is afraid of life, is never brave and doesn’t believe he is special. ![]() This book draws the reader straight in… first line… Arthur Ness ran… immediately I wanted to know… Who was he? Where was he running to? Was something chasing him? I believe a good storyteller always asks questions of the reader. Sometimes it’s because I want an ‘easier’ read which still has a quality story and well-rounded characters but it flows easily and isn’t as long as general fiction books. I never used to read YA books but more and more over the years I’m finding myself drawn to them for various reasons. ![]() ![]() ![]() The simple answer to that is – anytime! If you have a unique interest in the conflict between the British and Dutch navies, and the historical context of the American Revolution to that European conflict, than this is the book for you. That is all well and good, but she gets so hopelessly bogged down in detail that the average reader loses focus as she meticulously explores topics such as the history of the "ship of the line" method of naval warfare, complete with irrelevant digressions on earlier British court martials of admirals from the 1740's who deviated from the rigid rules of naval warfare. Tuchman wants to demonstrate the importance of the Dutch navy, the Dutch's recognition of American vessels, and their willingness to trade with the colonies despite Britain's embargo, on the overall outcome of the war. Instead, Barbare Tuchman has given us a very scholarly and well-researched discourse on the Dutch and British navies, with an occasional mention of the conflict in the colonies. Call me a traditionalist, but I think it is reasonable to assume that a book promising to be about the American Revolution, even one claiming a "fresh approach", should have more than a passing reference to the battle for American independence. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lindsey Hilsum avoids the traps of pop psychology or attempting to reduce the enigmatic and remarkable Marie Colvin to a set of motivations or insecurities. One of the most difficult things in the world to write is a biography of a complex and larger-than-life personality, which is surely who Marie Colvin was. ![]() The first thing you will notice is that it is gripping, enthralling, and compelling, a story well-written and excellently told. The American President has taken his stand against free expression, so now this book is more important than ever. Free expression and brave reporting (speaking truth to power) are a hallmark of our Western values, no more so than in the United States, where it is enshrined as the First Amendment to the Constitution and cannot be abridged even by a democratic majority. Know that you will be “doing well” by giving them one of the most important and well-written books of these times, and you will be “doing good” by focusing attention on what I call the Global War on Free Expression that has picked up steam in the last several years. And gift it to your friends for Christmas or any other occasion. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He had his own issues but was still considerate and caring.
